There’s a message waiting for her from Gun.

Can’t meet tonight. Sorry for last minute cancel. See you tomorrow?

Sulan does her best to ignore the disappointment that worms its way in. It’s not like they’ve never had to cancel on one another before. In fact, the only reason she jumped into Vex was to tell him she had to cancel tonight.

Still, she’d hoped to see him, even if just for a few minutes. The events of the past few hours have left her reeling. She could use solid friendship right now, even with the awkward way they left things.

She sends a message back. See you tomorrow. Need one last training session before the Meat Grinder. Then, thinking that may sound a little too impersonal, she adds, Hope you have a good night.

She logs off and pulls the Vex set from her head–and comes face to face with Taro, her twin brother.

He’s sitting cross legged on the floor of her bedroom. He seems to prefer the floor to furniture. His back leans against the wall, an empty dinner plate on the hardwood floor in front of him. Her own plate of food sits untouched on the end of the bed.

If someone had asked her to make a list of the top ten things she would be doing tonight, having a sleepover with her long-lost twin brother would not have been on it.

She replays the moment when Eugene got up from the dinner table and walked out. Now that she knows what was going on, the scene has reformed in her mind.

Her dad was hurting. Their perfect marriage was a sham. In fact, Eugene and Li Yuan weren’t even married, not in the we-both-said-I-do way. That had been as much of a shock as everything else she’d learned tonight.

But her mom and dad still love each other. She’s certain of that, even if it had taken Li Yuan exactly fifteen seconds to get naked with Aston. What did all this mean for their family?

“So …” Taro looks at her in the awkward silence. “Twins.”

She puffs out a breath. “Yeah, twins. This is really weird.”

“For me, too. Think our parents locked us in here to try and make us get along?” His small smile tells her that he’s teasing.

It dispels some of her tension. “I think they locked us in here because they don’t want to answer any more questions until my dad gets home.”

“That’s what I think, too. They don’t want to deal with us. Did you see your friend in Vex?”

“He was busy. I left him a message.”

“You hang out in Vex a lot?”

“Kind of. Do you have access to Vex at your place in Alaska?”

“Not really. I mean, some people do, but it’s not for hanging out and playing games like you guys do.” His gaze shifts to her untouched plate of food. “Are you going to eat that?”

She raises an eyebrow and pulls the plate of food toward her. “Just because you’re my brother doesn’t mean you can steal my food.
